First step with images.

In this session, you will go forward by doing exercise. To manage the files, make a folder for this session.
Then download this image by rightclick and “save as” – save it in the folder you have made.

Exercise 1:

  1. Find out what is the file format/type and file size.
  2. Open the image file in your Adobe Photoshop. Now, find what is the image size, the resolution, the mode – color depth.
  3. Make a copy with other formats : JPEG, TIFF and GIF. Then minimize or close your photoshop
  4. Open the folder with Windows Explorer and find the size of each format.
  5. Open your MS Power Point. Put all the images on a slide with dark background. See the differents.
  6. Make notes all what have you found and make conclusion.

Exercise 2 :

  1. Open the original image in Photoshop.
  2. Go to menu “Image”, click “Adjustment” -> “Level”. A dialog box will appear. Move the sliders. Make notes about what the changes in previes. Then click “cancel”. You don’t need to change the file.
  3. Do the same with “Brightness & Contrast”.
  4. Now with “Image size”. Change the image size to 1024 pixel width. Save as “hold1024.PNG”
  5. Then bring back to the original size by “undo”.
  6. Change the “canvass size” to width 12 inch and height 14 inch. Save as “hold12in”
  7. Then do the same process but to 300 pixel and 3 inch – 4 inch. Save each of the images.
  8. Now minimize/close the Photoshop and observe how is the results.
  9. Make notes all your conclusion. Can you see the different between image size and canvass size?

Exercise 3 :

  1. Open the original image with Photoshop.
  2. Change the “canvas size” to width 13 inch and heigh 15 inch.
  3. Then click menu “Image” -> Trim. Click OK.
  4. What is your conclusion?
  5. Now click menu “Image”. Can you see that “Crop” is greyed?
  6. In the left side can you see icons of tools? If not, click menu “Window” and click “Tools”
  7. If you put your cursor on each icon, the tool’s name will appear. Get the “Crop Tool” then click there.
  8. Your cursor shape will be changed and become crop tool. Make selection with the cursor. Go back to menu “image”. Now you find that “Crop” is black but the others are greyed. Click “Crop”. What happened now?
  9. To go back to the original, just “undo”.
  10. Try again the “crop tool”. But this time don’t click “crop” but “Esc”.
  11. Can you see the different between “crop” and “trim”?

Do the same way for this image file:

Since this is a colored image, find out also what is the different when you go to menu “Image”.

Finally, write whatever you have discovered by this session.
