With selection tools, you can select certain area to be processed. This is the tool you will deal with :
The top one is a pointer. This is not for selection. You will see how you need it.
The second one called marquee tool. You can see a small dot in the right bottom of it, right click it and find out what types of marquee tools we have.
The third is called lasso tool. Right click it and find out what types we have.
Then we see the quick selection tools. This is only in Photoshop version CS3.
Now download this file for your exercise, as usual, by rightclick and save as….
Use magnetic lasso tool to select the biggest windmollen. Double click will close your selection.
- Click menu Selection -> deselect. What happened?
- Click again Selection -> reselect. What happened?
- Click Selection -> inverse. What happened?
- Click Selection -> inverse to bring back the original selection.
- If you want to crop or lessen the area of selection, push button “alt” while doing the second (correction) selection. See this video clip.
- In opposite, using “ctrl” button will add the existing selection. Try by yourself.
Exercise 2 :
- Open the windmollen image in your Photoshop.
- Make a good selection on the biggest mollen.
- Do smoothing of the selection by using “feather” = 1px.
- Click copy – then paste. Now look at “layer” window. What happened there?
- Make sure that the new layer is selected. Click the “pointer”, then use your mouse to move the second biggest mollen to a place you want.
- Save in PNG, JPEG, TIF and PSD. Close all, then open each copy again. Do you notice what is the different between each format?
Exercise 3 :
- Open this file in your Photoshop:

- Do “selection” around the boy, then go to menu Selection -> Inverse;
- Then go to menu Edit -> Clear. WHAT IS HAPPENING?
- Look at “History” window. If it is not yet appeared, go to menu Window –> check History.
- In the History window, find the line “Clear”, select it, rightclick then “delete”.
- Now it backs to the original one.
- Look at “Layer” window. You will see a line titled “background”. Double click it! Click “yes” for confirmation and naming the new layer.
- Go to menu Edit -> click Clear. THIS TIME, WHAT DO YOU GET?
- Safe it as .gif
