If we talk about Video Editor Software, usually we talk about software to create a video by putting image or video scenes one after the other, then put the audio and effects. But how to edit the video scene itself? For example if we have a scene we got from a digital camera and we take it with portrait position, then we have to rotate the movie. Most Video Editor Software don’t have this feature.
So far, I find an excellent video clip processing freeware – it is VIRTUALDUB. With this small program, we can put many “filter”s – include to rotate or crop it. The installation is also very easy, can be said without installation. You just unzip in a folder and run the .exe file. With this software you can also do “crop” the video, not only crop the “frames”.
These are steps to do cropping a video :
- Open your video with VirtualDub. If you don’t have any video clip to try, you can download it here.
- Menu Video -> Filters. A “filters” dialogbox will appear, but the button for “cropping” is greyed.

- It will be enabled only if you put at least a filter. So click “Add” and choose resize. When the “resize” setting box comes out, let the new size 100% – means there will be no change.

- Now, the cropping button is enabled. Click it to get the setting dialog box – you can set the cropping with x-y number or by dragging.

- This is the result you will have

- Save as AVI. VirtualDub supports several video formats to be processed, but it save only as AVI or WAV. Anyhow, if you want, you can use Video Converter Software to have another formats.
As exercise, try other filters.
